Tech Talk – Cedric Cyrus
As the Information Technology Intern my roles change daily. From setting up and fixing PC’s, maintaining printers, printing tickets, and what every else the club calls on me for. I mainly spend my time working on requests that come from various departments for equipment they might need and the software that goes along with it. The club has more than 250 computers and around 650 TV’s that need to be maintained and well kept.
As of right now work is a little challenging, but it didn’t start out this way… The first week of my internship I was part time and I was only here two times a week, the first two weeks of work the only thing I got accomplished was setting up my PC the way they set-up all the PC’s in the building and that’s not as easy as it sounds. The following weeks I had to set-up numerous computers and install software for many individuals around the ballpark. I wasn’t chauffeured around and taught how to do things I was told “this is where they are…” and “This is what they need…Go.” and believe me that I have gotten lost plenty of times.
A little information about me… I started fooling around with computers in 7th grade and started programming in 8th grade. I have been programming longer than I could legally work and legally drive. I currently attend Saint Cloud State University majoring in Computer Science with a Minor in International Business. My hobbies include programming, gaining knowledge about anything and everything, driving and having fun in general.
Working with the IT department known as TECH TALK is a challenging but so far fun experience. Including myself there are only 9 of us in this department and I am the only intern. Working right across from Brent makes every day go by a little smoother, he always has any and every one laughing and always has work for me to do. James is like a mentor here for me, he is only a few years older than me and every time he works with me I feel like that’s exactly how I am going to be when I graduate and start working.
The IT department works and acts like they deserve a family sitcom on TV. Shelley is the over protective mom that makes sure everything is running smooth and steady. John is the dad who is all about work but doesn’t mind fun and games here and there when the work is done. James is the son who is always eager to get what he needs done completed. Brent is the brother who does his works but when he gets the chance he has as much fun as possible. Ryan is the latest son with the most energy not yet realizing that he can take his time with things. Purvi is the older sister who lives away from home and only comes to visit on holidays and when she has an accomplishment. Wade… see Wade is like the grandfather not really in control of anything it seems like but really is in control of everything and has all the knowledge you could possibly need about anything. Last but not least we have Tony he is always running around like he is never doing work when in reality without him this place wouldn’t function right. He keeps everyone connected and keeps a close eye on the people who have connections into the building.
That’s exactly how they act yet the 8 of them keep the technology working properly and making sure there are no problems in any department. I follow behind all of them in any given day just going wherever the work calls. It’s the satisfaction I get that makes this place amazing, even the simple act of delivering a mouse to someone makes their day. I enjoy the atmosphere and the people around this building and I wouldn’t want to do my internship anywhere else. Every day is a blast and I can’t wait to see where this internship takes me.
