A whole lot of softball for some very good causes – Tara Smith

Last Saturday, August 25th the Pohlad Companies hosted their 6th Annual Softball Tournament at Taft Park in Richfield, MN. There were a total of 21 teams; 9 teams from the Twins Organization. Some of the other well-known companies included: BMW of Minnetonka and Northern Lights Broadcasting (K-Twin 96.3 FM).

Our intern team was named “All Business,” and we certainly lived up to our name. Our first game was 8:00 am Saturday morning. I’m not going to lie, it was early! However, the early game time didn’t stop us. We won our first game 12-1. The second game 24-8, and the third game 20-12.

We were on a roll. If we won the next two games we would achieve the ultimate goal: playing at the Championship game under the lights of Target Field in September. Baseball Friday Night Lights!

Our next game was at 6:00 PM. The game went down to the wire-if we lost, we were going home. If we won, we were going to the semi-finals. We had a tough start, but came back within 3 runs. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough in the end to secure the win.

Overall, our team had a great tournament. Even though we didn’t make the championship game, we still were 6th best out of 21 teams. Not bad for never practicing together! I thought it was just fun to play for a great cause and spend a day with other Twins employees.

The softball tournament was a great money raiser for charity at the end of the day. All proceeds raised during the Softball Tournament were distributed equally among the five Federated Funds supported in the Pohlad Companies 2012 Community Giving Campaign (Community Health Charities, Community Shares of Minnesota, Greater Twin Cities United Way, Minnesota Environmental Fund, and United Arts Fund).

The Championship game is going to be held on Friday night, September 21st. The battle begins with a rematch from last year: The Twins Grounds Crew vs. BMW.
